In the course wiki you will be working with your classmates to locate and share PowerPoint presentations that exhibit two or more of the 10 principles by Mayer. Once you have located the PowerPoint presentation on SlideShare you will embed it on this Module 3 Page in the course wiki. Each entry should 1) clearly display the author of the PowerPoint, 2) Explain which principle is being demonstrated and how, and 3) Please post your initials next to your entry. You can separate your entries by inserting a horizontal line. (The icon with the blue bar in the wiki toolbar.) To embed a slideshare presentation just copy the embed code and click in the TV icon in the wiki toolbar. You can click on "Other html" then paste the embed code and click on Save.

What Is Instructional Design?

Website: www.slideshare.net

In this Slideshare presentation, the task to be achieved is to convey to the viewers the meaning of instructional design. This video stays on target taking the viewer through a series of slides that effectively reduces extraneous processing as described by Mayer in the course reading. The first area addressed by Mayer and included in this presentation is to reduce extraneous material. This Slideshare includes short, concise text that explains the concept quickly and effectively. The second area explained by Mayer and included in this video is signaling. Each essential concept in this Slideshare is highlighted at the beginning of the presentation with a short highlighted or bold phrase or question introducing the basic concept to be understood. This presentation does an excellent job of what Mayer coined as the "spatial contiguity principle" where explanatory words are posted next to the picture for better understanding and synthesis of the information.

Mayer defines one of two principles for fostering generative processing as the application of the "multimedia principle." This means people learn better from pictures and words rather than just seeing and reading the words. This slide show does a wonderful job of creating a visual representation such as a picture or graph for almost every text entry shown on the screen. This helps the viewer to create better connections in the brain by being shown both the verbal and pictorial representation of the subject area which studies have shown leads to deeper understanding. Finally, Mayer talks about the "personalization principle" where using a conversational style to the text helps to create a relationship between the viewer and presenter. If a relationship is formed, studies have shown that the viewer will try harder to understand the material being presented.

Life Cycle of a Pumpkin
Author: heeri1tr
website: www.slideshare.net
This slideshare is about the life cycle of a pumpkin. There are engaging questions to start and then pictures and text to support what the learner will and is learning. There is an overview of what was thought at the end of the presentation. The first principal that is being demonstrated in this Slideshare presentation is the multimedia principal. There are clear pictures that go with the words throughout the presentation With using both, it helps the learner "build connections between a verbal representation and a pictorial representation of the same material" (Mayer). Another principal is the personalization principal by Mayer. This presentation has language in conversational style rather than formal language. Also the language is "student friendly" in the way it is presented and written. AB

Show me your number
Author: ewkak5
website: www.slideshare.net

This slide show is about different ways students can visually see numbers. During the first few weeks of school, learning numbers is extremly important in kindergarten. Kids learn best with manulapatives such as the ones stated on this slide show. As stated by Mayer, it is important to make sense of incoming material and integrating it with prior knowledge. Mayer also states that animation helps students retain information. Showing numbers is kind of boring to 5 year olds. However if they can make numbers with shapes, materials or evern their own bodies they will retain the information and apply it to new learning. MCG

Emerging Media

Author: Joanna Pena-Bickley
Website: SlideShare.net

The SlideShare PowerPoint presentation on “Emerging Media” focuses on the concept of media convergence in terms of business, advertising, TV, the Internet, and various other mediums. This can be a difficult topic to teach, since convergence and media are continuously changing and evolving. The presentation does a nice job of including relevant examples and concepts that include several of Mayer’s 10 principles as defined in his article.

The presentation does include a lot of extraneous information that can be confusing to the learner, so Mayer’s signaling principle helps to identify key elements in the lesson. An overview and section headings are included to emphasize important concepts. The presentation also uses the spatial contiguity principle, in that written words are situated close and directly connect to sample pictures on the slide pages. In addition, the presentation exhibits Mayer’s pre-training principle. The term convergence is defined at the very beginning of the SlideShare PowerPoint. This allows learners to have an understanding of the essential term prior continuing through the presentation. Finally, Mayer’s multimedia principle is also used. The convergence presentation includes a combination of words and relevant, intriguing pictures, which Mayer believes supports learning as well. -JN

You Suck At PowerPoint!

Author: Jesse Desjardins
Website: SlideShare.net

The presentation "You Suck At PowerPoint!" focuses on bettering individuals presentation skills and many of the pitfalls designers get into when creating lengthy presentations. From a yearbook advisor standpoint, throughout the year, sales teams made up of students come up with marketing strategies to make the publication a bit more attractive of a buy. Student groups are asked to present to business and school board members there ideas for selling the book, which include sales, promotions for reduced pricing, and/or creative incentives to buy the yearbook.

Before students take to PowerPoint to create their presentation, we always watch Don McMillian's comedy routine, share a laugh and then get down to basics.

The presentation does a great job at using Mayer's Coherence Principle by giving only the most important information with simple visuals that take nothing away from the overal message. Actually, as you scroll through the presentation, many of Mayer's principles are echoed. This presentation, once scrolled through also does a nice job at narrating itself, however, as the presenter, I never feel the need to prepare a statement for each slide. While presenting the information, I feel like Mayer's Voice Principle comes into effect. Rather than lecturing on and on and on, asking for notes to be taken, the audience and I can have a conversation about each slide while sharing information and learning from each other. -JP

The History of Jeans

This presentation is a short history of blue jeans in the United States. In this presentation there are three principles described by Mayer. First is the Coherence Principle, this power point presentation is straight to the point which eliminates extraneous processing by the brain. The author gives a few facts and pictures on each slide. Second, is the Spatial Contiguity Principle which has the words next to the corresponding pictures. People learn better when corresponding words and pictures are presented near rather than far from each other on the page or screen(Mayer). Third is the Multimedia Principle, which presents words and pictures together instead of just words. People learn more when they have pictures and/or illustrations and words to describe something. -AH

Photosynthesis

Website: www.slideshare.net

Author: GU-R.T.Romualdez,Agusan del Norte

This slideshow is about photosynthesis. It does a great job to starting from the very beginning and breaking it down as simply as possible. Photosynthesis can be a very difficult concept for students to understand, because this sideshow starts with the basics, it would be a great resource to use in the classroom. Being able to break down photosynthesis to its most basic parts and then building on that to explain the process would be very beneficial for students. Many of the basic concepts are ideas that students should have already learned in previous lessons. Mayer says how important it is to make sense of incoming material and incorporate it with prior knowledge. This slideshow does a great job of using the multimedia principle. It integrates pictures into each of the concepts to help students get a better understanding and help relate the concepts to the real world. The last principle that this slideshow exhibits is the coherence principle. THis presentation does a great job to getting to the point and only gives students the information that they need to know.

Overall, this is a well made slideshow that does a great job of explaining photosynthesis to students. It uses many of Mayer's concepts and does a great job of relating many of these
concepts to the students real world. KC

Dystopian Novels

Website: http://www.slideshare.net/
Author: gordon77

This slide presentation offers an overview of dystopian literature. After defining the term "utopia," and differentiating between utopia and "dystopia," the author presents several related slides to illustrate how the settings and plot events of different novels cause them to be examples of dystopian literature. The author, gordon77, uses as examples three novels I have taught in class, including 1984 by George Orwell, A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

The slideshow uses many of Mayer's principles. First, the information in the slideshow is free of extraneous material, as there are no unnecessary textual or audio clips to distract the viewer from the focus on dystopian literature. The author signals essential material by providing colored text in separate headings and underlining key words and phrases, and the spatial continuity is solid (that is, text is placed next to the corresponding graphics). The animation and corresponding text appear simultaneously, offering the slideshow a degree of temporal contiguity.

In addition to reducing extraneous processing, gordon77 does an effective job of managing essential processing. First, the slideshow segments the material into manageable, separate chunks of information. By defining utopia and dystopia, and by outlining the fundamental differences between the two, the author pre-trains the slideshow viewer with key concepts before becoming specific about the content of the three novels. Finally, the slideshow fosters generative processing by providing pictures to accompany the textual information in every slide. This, according to Mayer, yields the biggest overall effect (1.39) and was proven to exist in 11 of 11 transfer tests.

In general, this slideshow, while lacking any kind of audio qualities, is effective in that it overlaps the Science of Instruction (SOI) with the Science of Learning (SOL) in an engaging, useful manner. JS

Don't Be A PowerPoint Felon

Website: http://www.slideshare.net
Author: Nick Smith

The goal of this SlideShare presentationl is to give tips to the learner on developing effective PowerPoint Presentations in a humorous way. There was no extraneous material to distract the learner from the message (keeping in line with the goal of the presentation and one of Mayer’s principles). Additionally, according to Mayer, people learn better from words and pictures rather than from words alone. This presentation does a good job of combining the two to get the overall message across in a meaningful way. There was a good balance of pictures and words. Using too many pictures can be as ineffective as using too many words. The information presented was done so in a way that was easy to follow and understand by the learner. Finally, this presentation used a more informal, conversational style conversation pattern as opposed to a formal, more technical pattern. {SZH}

20 Questions to Ask Yourself About Your Social Media Marketing

Author: Drew McLellan & Veronica Maria Jarski from MarketingProfs

The priciples that are being used are the Multimedia Principle and the Contiguity Principle. The presentation displays words and pictures in order for people to learn better accoridng to the Multimedia Principle. The Contiguity Principle is displayed in this presentation because it has corresponding words and pictures that are presented on the same screen near each other rather than far from each other. In my opinion, these two principles are presented very clearly and the pictures definitely correspond to the words perfectly. The presentation keeps the learner engaged with the combinaton of the two principles. TLC

This slideshow is about the ancient mesoamerican civilizations of the Aztec, Inca, and Maya. The general principle of the slideshow is informational, as its goal is to present information to the learners. Additionally, the slideshow follows the contiguity principle as defined by Richard Mayer as "corresponding words and pictures are presented at the same time or next to each other on the screen". This presentation shows pictures along with a description about what each picture means or the purpose of the item shown. MC

Travel Tips to Hawaii

Website: www.slideshare.net
Author:Empowered Presentations, Presentation Design Firm - Honolulu, HI

This slideshow takes users through a bunch of tips on Hawaii travel. I choose this presentation because it is something that my students could potentially create during their travel unit in Spanish 1. (Currently, they make travel brochures on an assigned Hispanic country. This is way cooler :) ) This slideshare presents key travel points in short snippets with vivid images, personalized text and a nice eye-catching flow (background, images, text, etc.) that is not over the top or too loud. One of Mayer's principles in this slideshare is the personalization principle. Mayer states that users learn better when text is in more of a conversational mode and not in a strict, formal manner. This slideshare focuses on the user and what he/she will experience in Hawaii, thus using text such as when "you" arrive, or "you should eat this/wear that", etc. The authors of this slideshare did an excellent job of creating a relationship with the potential users because it is laid back and easy to understand. A second principle that can be noted in this slideshare is the multimedia principle. Mayer states, "People learn better from words and pictures than from words alone" (766). This slideshare uses a wonderful combination of images and words to help the user dissect the information and make better sense of it. Because this is an informational presentation, the use of images allows the user to visualize these tips or tricks of travel in Hawaii and not just read about it. The images are clear and the text is to the point. It is easy to make connections between the text and photos in this slideshare. WM

Solving Two Step Equations

Website: www.slideshare.net
Author: Ms. Dewey-Hoffman

This slideshow explains the process used to solve two step linear equations. This would be an appropriate slideshow for any middle school, or high school Algebra 1 class just learning about solving equations. The slideshow is a good example of several of Mayer's principals. This slideshow does a great job of spatial contiguity. The words in the slides are directly next to the lines of work explaining each step. This gives the user the reason a step is allowed, and meaning behind each step of work. This deepens the users understanding of solving equations and makes it more than just an algorithm you follow. The slideshow also does a good job of segmenting. There is never too much information on one slide. The problems are solved one and a time, and each problem is broken up one step at a time. The information is chunked nicely so a student never gets lost in the material, or the explanation. Personalization is also represented well in this slideshow. The author uses words direct at the user instead of textbook, or formal words. On slide 4 the author directs the user to "stick it back" instead of using the more technical term of "substitute the solution". This allows the user to focus on what is going on in the solving process, and not the language. Lastly the author makes sure to use multimedia within the slideshow. These are not just a bunch of random math problems. The "story problems" include real world contexts, about relatable subjects for students that include pictures of what they are solving equations about. This allows the student to feel connected to the process, and see how the information might be used in a real scenario. MK

Egypt and Sumer

Website: www.sldieshare.net
Author: Mindy McAdams

This presentation about ancient Egypt and Sumer displays two of Mayer's principals of Multimedia Instructions. First, this presentation has many of the essential words on several of the slides that have been highlighted. This displays Mayer's Signaling Principal. This principal states that people will learn better when essential words are highlighted and therefore the author of this presentation has made all key words and important terms evident through the use of highlighting. The second principal that is used is Mayer's Coherence Principal. Because the author does not use any extraneous material, the audience is not distracted by any unnecessary video, sounds or movement. On the over hand, there are several of Mayer's principals that this author does not follow and if used used would clean things up for the viewers. DB

This PowerPoint was created by a MMCC faculty member to provide orientation material for new faculty members at the college who are unfamiliar with this specific developmental reading and writing skills course, English 104. As a presentation, it is actually quite lively for an academic "meant for colleagues" PowerPoint--this isn't a presentation that would be shared with students, but would be used to instruct people with advanced degrees who may be slated to teach this course; it is also used as a "summary" of the experiences typical of English 104 students, so when these students enter their next class, typically English 110, then faculty members who have not taught 104 will be better prepared to help their new 110 students adapt and adjust to new expectations. While it is a bit of a stretch, Bill Reader's PowerPoint does seem to meet, minimally, three of Mayer's principles: Personalization--this material really is far more conversational than the majority of PowerPoints I reviewed (including my own!); Signaling--it does highlight, extensively through the use of bullet points, key points; Coherence--the language is quite pared down from the academic text that would have shaped this PowerPoint's content. Also, as there is no narration, there is no Redundancy with on-screen texts. Overall, this task of locating a good PowerPoint appropriate to the educational level I teach has proven to be a rather pointed lesson in what I, as a person who wants students to learn from multimedia presentations, to do much more to utilize Mayer's principles in my own efforts.--GMM

Slide Show introducing Polygons.
This slide show demonstrates the multimedia principle, signaling principle, and spatial contiguity principle. The slide show shows multiple pictures for students to learn the vocabulary before actually giving a definition that goes along with the pictures. This demonstrates the multimedia principle. Then it shows the picture and corresponding word at the same time. Each slide would has a different picture and vocabulary word. This would demonstrate the spatial contiguity principle. Words are highlighted to show importance and slides are labeled thus showing the signaling principle. - ML

The editor of slideshare Marisa Wong shares a little about herself and her tools she use for success in her life. Every powerpoint slide contains a picture that connects with the tool of success she is writing about, except for the last slide. The last slide ask a question and offers the viewer an opportunity to share what their tools for success are. The Mayer Principals present that I noticed are The Spatial Contiguity Principal, the words and pictures are presented near rather than far from each other on the page and the Multimedia Principal, people learn better from words and pictures than from words alone. - JL

Author: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust

This slideshow demonstrates the personalization principle, the redundancy principle, and the spatial contiguity principle. The whole idea that the "blobs" are telling the story of Macbeth make it more conversational. Most of the time this play is taught to high school students. The Shakespearean language is hard to understand, even for adults. With this casual way of telling the story, the students pay more attention to the plot and the characters. Also, this slideshow doesn't use animation or sound. This helps eliminate unnecessary aspects to the presentation, while still getting the point across. This slideshow could be improved if the text was spoken. Lastly, this slideshow uses the spatial contiguity principle. The pictures and words are presented at the same time. Each character has the correct dialogue next to them. This helps with understanding of the story and plot. (BEM)

Another Try at Something More Interesting! A drumroll for Drumline!

Website: www.slideshare.net
Author: Sam Stout, MMCC
After asking around (I thought PowerPoints were more popular among my peers), a colleague who teaches speech offered to share this PowerPoint with me. He said he created it to illustrate a "how to" speech. As you view it, you'll see a huge issue--the videos embedded in the PowerPoint do not work! Yup, he's aware of this, but he wasn't sure what the problem is, so my apologies. It is unfortunate, because I suspect the videos, which he informed me are video clips that illustrate the drumming techniques, would have made a major contribution to this PowerPoint.
This is a far more interesting and visually appeal PowerPoint than my other entry--and it does meet several more of Mayer's principles: Spatial contiguity--text is printed in conjunction with graphics--in fact, the text is sometimes on top of illustrations, which may create confusion or may lead to misreading/misinterpretation; Redundancy--there is no narration, so there's no overlapping with on-screen text; Multimedia--photos/clip art are presented along with words--the coordination of texts and images reinforces key aspects and assists in greater, more significant learning; Personalization--there is a readily accessible communication styles, which is augmented by some humor tied to the clip art in particular; Pretraining--there's extensive naming of the key components of this activity--the Pretraining, however, requires a fairly high level of previous knowledge, so I question if this is truly effective in this presentation; Coherence--any material deemed extraneous is omitted, although some sections to offer additional informational text, and this may assist learners in grasping these key elements; Signaling--essentials to the aspects of drumming are highlighted and reinforced, which serves to prepare students for the information. While this PowerPoint has much to offer, it is still flawed, and if I were a student, I think I would be truly disappointed and concerned about the missing video content. Still, much more interesting that the "mostly text" offering I submitted above. --GMM

Author: Todd Wilms
Website: http://www.slideshare.net/

The slideshow, 10 Leadership Lessons I Wish I had learned in my 20’s describes the past 20 years of Todd’s experience in leadership positions. During the past 2 decades, he has learned (the hard way)several strategies that help businesses and employers find success. The complex relationship a person has with their job can seem difficult at times, but Todd has pointed out some major aspects of leadership with 10 simple points.

According to Richard Mayer’s 10 Principles of Multimedia Learning, Mr. Wilms has connected with a couple of the keys to presentation success. The contiguity principle which recommends that People learn better when corresponding words and pictures are presented near rather than far from each other in time or on the screen is exactly what Wilms has done. He has eye appealing visuals that match a phrase he has stated. Wilms also connected with Mayer’s ideas through the coherence principle. This principle states that People learn better when extraneous words, pictures, and sounds are excluded rather than included. The format is simple, to the point, and the words and pictures are formatted to present his ideas in a simplistic fashion. TR
